Commemorações do 25 de Abril

As many of you know, Portugal had been under a dictatorship for 40 years, hinging its political orientation on a strong nationalism and traditionalism. However, in 1974, the military forced Portugal to decide to put an end to this authoritarian regime with a non-violent revolution.

On the morning of 25th of April 1974, thousands of soldiers arrived in Lisbon from the different regions of Portugal to claim their country's freedom. On this day women put carnations inside the shotgun barrels and created an image that today is still a powerful symbol of the Portuguese rebellion and courage.

In commemoration of the rebellion that changed the future of the country, on this date across all the Portuguese cities many events take place to remember and celebrate this special day.

After 43 years, Lisbon will celebrate the day with concerts, talks, conferences, exhibitions and movies; with the hope to send a message that urges people ' not to forget the past and help people to create a critical opinion about the brutality of all dictatorships across the world.'
