According to the Spanish edition of Condé Nast Traveller, the best beaches for surfing in Europe are Portuguese!
Praia do Guincho
We already talked about Guincho in our previous post (a wonderful bicycle ride from Cascais to Cabo da Roca, splashing in the diamond waters of Guincho), a beach mainly suited for windsurfing.
Fronting in a straight line the African cities of Casablanca, Rabat and El Jadida, Sagres and Algarve are in the lowest Portuguese south-west point.
They are historically known mostly for their importance in the early Portuguese Age of Discovery.
Peniche, famous for its “Supertubos”, very fast and powerful tubular waves, considered of the best in Europe and called by some the “European Pipeline”.
Praia de Santa Cruz
Praia de Santa Cruz is the theatre of the Summer Carnival, Carnaval de Verão, and the yearly festival “Ocean Spirit”. From the name, you can imagine its water-sport focus and its international allure.
Praia do Coxos
The last beach on the list is Praia dos Coxos, featuring both a safe creek for bathers and a more dangerous and rougher spot for surfers. Beware of the ocean currents!
We, Português et Cetera, want to add one last beach that we absolutely love: Nazaré
