A pleasant afternoon in great company!
On the 5th of June, our Portuguese language school organized a picnic at Jardim do Torel.
Jardim is the Portuguese word for garden. This wonderful garden, with a great view to the western part of Lisbon, it’s located next to the Campo das Mártires da Pátria. It remains one of the best hideaways in the city, renovated in 2009 with an esplanade on the lower terrace. The name Torel comes from the former owner named Cunha Thorel. At that time, the garden was an early 18th century farmhouse.
Indira Leão, our history teacher, guided us during this afternoon. There are two ways to get to Jardim do Torel. The first one, and the most known, is getting the Elevador do Lavra, the city’s oldest lift. If, for any reason, you couldn’t get the lift, you have to climb a very steep street. The second one, that’s where we went because it’s less tiring, is walking to Rua das Pretas.
When we arrived, we were dazzled by the wonderful city view. We stayed near the belvedere and we prepared our picnic. Our students brought delicious things: roasted chicken, fruit, Portuguese wine, cheese, and cookies. One of our students even made American cookies for us!
We talked about subjects related to Lisbon and Portugal. Our students practised their Portuguese language skills. It’s impressive how they speak Portuguese so well in such a short time!
At the end of our tour, unfortunately, we had to say goodbye to two students who are going to return to their homelands. Eventually our students end up returning to Lisbon!
Below, you can have an idea of how enjoyable was our picnic.
Don’t forget to join us next week for another walking tour!
Join us to enjoy the belvedere of Jardim do Torel!
Lisbon is known for its seven hills and the belvederes with breathless views to the city. You probably have known some! With the arrival of hot days and sunshine, the first school event of June will delight you. Our suggestion for the next 5th of June it’s a picnic at the belvedere of Jardim do Torel.
The Jardim do Torel it’s a garden located next to the Campo das Mártires da Pátria. From this viewpoint, we have a clear view of the western part of the city. We’ll be able to see Avenida da Liberdade, the hill of São Roque or the belvedere of São Pedro de Alcântara.
Indira Leão, our history teacher will guide us during this afternoon. She will briefly talk about the history of the place.
The Jardim do Torel, it’s from an early 18th century farmhouse. It owes its name to the Cunha Thorel, the wealthiest owner of the area. In January 1928 the land of the palace, was ceded to the Lisbon City Hall, which built the garden and the belvedere.
It was requalified in 2009 with a terrace on the lower platform and remains one of the secrets of the city. We’ll also find an artificial lake with a mermaid statue. During the month of August turns into swimming pool of the beach of Torel.
The picnic will be the perfect time to meet new people and enjoy the good weather!
When we have a picnic in Portugal, it’s a habit to bring something to eat or to drink. You can participate in this Portuguese custom by bringing something to share with the other students and teachers!
