An amazing picnic with great company!
On the 20th of March, our Portuguese language school organized a picnic at Saint George’s castle. The purpose of this event was to welcome spring. The beginning of spring happens between the 20th and the 21st of March. Spring it’s a pagan festivity associated to the rebirth of nature and the fertility. Interestingly, eggs play an important role in the celebrations of the spring equinox around the world, since they are a symbol of fertility!
Indira Leão, our history teacher, accompanied us on this pleasant afternoon. At Saint George ’s castle, we were surprised by the incredible views to the city. The weather was great! Inside the castle, we could see the statue D. Afonso Henriques. He was the first Portuguese king and led the Cristian troops to conquest Lisbon from the Muslims. The Cristian conquest of Lisbon was successful in 1147.
The students brought delicious foods and drinks to our picnic! He had wine, cinnamon biscuits (typical of Portugal) and strawberries. Some students made special foods for us: eggplants with goat cheese and tomato sauce and Greek pate. We even had Japanese cinnamon and ginger biscuits! Everything was delicious and the conversation was great! We talked about Lisbon, Portugal, North American and Brazilian politics. It was a perfect time for students to practise their Portuguese language skills and to meet new people.
At the end of the picnic, we had a special guest: a beautiful peacock. The animal was eating the crumbs that we left. Inside the castle, there is a cute family of friendly peacocks. We stayed at the castle until the sunset.
Below of this page you can find the photos of the picnic.
Don’t forget to join us next time! There is always something new to visit in Lisbon!
A picnic in the Castle of St. George
Spring is coming on the 20th of March. It is the season of the year between winter and summer characterized by the gradual increase of the temperatures. In many cultures, spring has been celebrated with rites and festivals revolving around its importance in food production. In European languages, the concept of spring is associated with the sowing of crops. It’s the time of fertility and rebirth of the elements of nature.
In order to celebrate this beautiful season of the year, our Portuguese language school will organize a picnic in the Castle of St. George. Come with us on the 20th of March!
Indira Leão, our history teacher, will guide us during the picnic. Indira will talk about the History of the castle. Saint’s George castle was the administrative centre of the Muslims during the 8th century until 1147. D. Afonso Henriques with the help of the French Templars reconquered the castle and the city of Lisbon in 1147. The current name was made by order of João I in the 14th century. It derives from the devotion of the castle to Saint George, patron saint of knights and crusaders.
Saint’s George castle is located on the highest hill in the historic centre. Its location provides to visitors one of the most beautiful views of the city and the Tagus estuary.
The entrance to the castle is free and here you can visit the Museum. The picnic will be the perfect time to get to know each other better and to taste some Portuguese flavours. We’ll have food and drinks, of course! If you want, you can bring something to drink or to eat to share with other students.
