Museu Colecção Berardo

An amazing afternoon filled with Modern and Contemporary art

Did you miss the funny and interesting afternoon with the teachers and the students of our school? Here you can discover all about what happened.

On the 18th of April, the students of our Portuguese language school have experienced an interactive visit to the Museu Coleção Berardo. It is located in one of the most beautiful places in Lisboa: Belém. There, we visited the permanent and temporary exhibition of Modern and Contemporary art.

The aim of this experience was to bring our students closer to the artistic patrimony present in Lisbon. This had been also a good chance for them to improve their understanding skills.

We had the chance to be led by an amazing guide, Jorge. He transmited us all his passion for modern and contemporary art. He created a dynamic visit, in which we were not just a public, but also a protagonist of the exhibition. He used mainly Portuguese, but also English to help our students to understand all the meaning of the artwork displayed. To learn about culture and history while practicing Portuguese is always one of the main objectives of our language school!

In the first section of the visit, we could see wonderful Modern art pieces from 1900 to 1960 (lfrom artist like Picasso, Fontana or Magritte). They represent the passage from figurative art to the abstraction.

In the second section we could admire what Bourgeois, Polke and other genius produced from 1960 to 2010.

In the end, we also visited the surprising temporay exhibition “No Place Like Home”, where Jorge focused on the iconic work of Duchamp: the urinal named Fountain.

After the visit we could share all our emotions and thoughts evoked by the artwork. This was an excellent opportunity to make some friends and to know more about other cultures.

Stay tuned and follow our website for our weekly posts! Here are some pictures of our afternoon.

The transformation of the traditional categories of the art object

Our Portuguese language school is pleased to let you know about our next event. On the 18th of April 2018 we are going to see an exhibition at Centro Cultural de Belém. We will visit Museu Colecção Berardo, where you can enjoy the best of modern and contemporary art.

The exhibition we are going to see is called Berardo Collection (1960-2010). This collection is dedicated to the period beginning in 1960 and extending over five decades. Here we will find the most important neo-vanguard artistic movements: from the Minimalism to Conceptualism, Post-Minimalism, Land Art and Arte Povera.

The peculiarity of these movements is the representation of the art object. The traditional aesthetics are transformed to create new archetypes. The work you are going to see is from American and European artists.

A guide specialized in modern and contemporary art will accompany us through this journey. She will speak both in English and Portuguese, helping you improve your listening and comprehensive skills.

The museum is situated in Belém, where we can enjoy its beautiful location. Here you can admire the peculiar architecture of Centro Cultural de Belém. It was built in 90’s and its architecture is in contrast with the rest of surrounding buildings.

By the end of the visit we will taste the original pastel de Belém in the old and traditional cafe “Pasteis de Belém”. We will enjoy these wonderful pasties sitting in the garden of Praça do Império. Through this experience you will get to know and bound with Portuguese people.
