Experiencing Lisbon nightlife in good company
On the 19th of July, our Portuguese language school took our students to Bairro Alto. This is an important neighbourhood in Lisbon for the people that want to enjoy Lisbon’s nightlife. For many people from Lisbon, Bairro Alto has the best bars and discos of the capital. Besides, it has an interesting History: it was only projected in 1498 during the reign of D. Manuel I. By this time, Praça do Comércio was emerging as a commercial and political centre. There was a need to house the merchants that were profiting with the Portuguese overseas expansion, so it was created Bairro Alto.
Indira Leão, our history teacher, accompanied us along the night. We walked around the neighbourhood in order to know better the bars, restaurants and discos. After that short walk, we chose one to stay for a while with caipinhas and mojitos with half the price.
There was also live music and some of the group opted to enjoy the music. Indira told us that the Great Earthquake of 1755 forced the people that lived in Bairro Alto to escape to safer areas of Lisbon. However, during the second half of the 19th century, the Bairro fixed the main Portuguese typographies and newspapers. The bohemian facet of Bairro flourished in that period and increased its popularity during the 80s of the 20th century.
Most of us lost track of the time and were entertained to talk until late. The great company as well as the weather prevented us from leaving. We were able to experience the nightlife in Lisbon!
